It is the third-generation main battle tank equipped by the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force. It was designed and manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to replace Type 61 and some Type 74 tanks. It entered service in 1990 and is known for its superior firepower, mobility and protection. Equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun of German Rheinmetall licensed by Japan, equipped with an automatic loader, a laser rangefinder integrated in the gun's long sight, and a thermal imager, with the ability to shoot between marches and at night. The main parts adopt composite armor or interval armor, with three-proof device, automatic fire extinguishing device and laser detection and alarm device, which enhances the survivability of the tank.
