It was a self-propelled surface-to-air missile launcher developed by France based on a AMX-30 tank chassis, specifically designed to operate the Roland missile, which was jointly developed with West Germany. It was officially adopted in 1977 and a total of 183 vehicles were produced. It is intended to provide the troops with additional anti-aircraft protection, covering areas well beyond anti-aircraft guns. The main structure was completely revamped to integrate missile launchers. The mobility of the AMX-30 is retained, making the vehicle have good all-terrain mobility and agility. The design and equipment demonstrate France's deep understanding of innovation and combat needs in air defense weapon systems, making it an important air defense platform during the Cold War.
