A historical site located on the southern coast of Crete, Greece. This castle was built between 1371 and 1374 by the Venetians and was initially named Saint Nichitas Castle to commemorate the nearby church. However, locals, out of dissatisfaction with the rulers of Venice, contemptuously referred to it as Fragokastelo, meaning "the castle of the Franks," which eventually became widely accepted, including the Venetians themselves. Not only was it a military fortress built by the Venetians on the island of Crete, but it was also built to control the residents of the rebellious Speakia region and resist pirate attacks.
