The armadillo is a mammal of the family Armadillidae in the order Odontopoda. The armadillo is named after its nine layered belt like structure. The armadillo is distributed in the southern end of South America, the Caribbean coast, and the Central American continent. The armadillo is a burrowing animal that burrows underground to live in. It sleeps day and night, has poor vision, but has an excellent sense of smell and can accurately locate ant nests. Scientists extracted leprosy bacteriocins from the armadillo to produce a leprosy vaccine, which played a significant role in human control of leprosy. Moreover, the armadillo is easy to domesticate and is one of the precious animals in modern medical experiments.
