In his early years, he studied rhetoric, argumentation, natural philosophy, and medicine with Empedocles. His ideas were influenced by Zeno, but mainly came from Protagoras. In 427 BC, he sent an envoy to Athens to request a united opposition to Syracuse, and in his later years, he resided in Larissa in Thessalonia.
