He was a famous Czech philosopher, art historian, and the founder of the Slok movement. Born into a German family, but later identified firmly with Czech identity and changed his name from Friedrich Emanuel Tiles to the Czechoslovakized Miroslav Tiles. Deeply influenced by the Czech Enlightenment and the Revolution of 1848, Thiels worked for the Czech National Revival. He advocated the concept of "a sound mind resides in a sound body", and emphasized the cultivation of character, discipline and cooperative spirit through gymnastics exercises to achieve self-governance.
