It is a volcano located in the Cascade Mountains in southwestern Washington state, United States. Its eruption on May 18, 1980, was one of the largest recorded volcanic explosions in North America. It has an active geological history, and its oldest volcanic ash deposits can be traced back to at least 40000 years ago. Before the catastrophic eruption in 1980, there were nine major eruptions with varying intervals between each eruption. Resulting in 57 deaths and causing massive damage, destroying the plants, animals, and ecosystems in the surrounding areas. In response to this eruption, the US Congress established the National Volcano Monument in 1982.
