The Mercedes Benz 300SL was originally designed to participate in car races. Its predecessor was the Mercedes W194 racing car, which won first place in the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race in 1952. Based on the success of the W194 racing car, Mercedes Benz improved it to a 300SL and launched it on the market.
