It is a famous historical symbol of Philadelphia, representing the spirit of freedom and independence. Originally commissioned by the Pennsylvania State Legislature in 1752, it was manufactured by the Whitechapel clock factory in London, England, and used to hang in the spire of the State Legislature building (now known as the Independence Hall). The clock face is engraved with the famous quote from the Bible: "Declare freedom to all people in the world," reflecting the pursuit of religious freedom and social justice at that time. It played an important role in American history, especially during the American War of Independence, and was used to declare important events, such as the public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776.
