VHS stands for Home Video System, which is a standard for home video recording and playback developed by Victory Corporation of Japan in 1976. Although the official representative of VHS is home video recording systems, initially VHS represented Vertical Helical Scan because it adopted the technology of magnetic head/magnetic tape vertical scanning. The magnetic tape in the home video cassette system is 12.65 millimeters wide (commonly referred to as the large inch format), and it passes through the recording head or playback head during playback.
