Mosquitoes are small insects in the family Mosquitidae, order Diptera. There are about 3300 species of mosquitoes worldwide, and 400 species have been found in China. Mosquitoes are distributed all over the world. Adults prefer to inhabit hidden, dark, and poorly ventilated areas. They are often found indoors under beds, behind cabinets, behind doors, in crevices between walls, as well as in animal sheds, basements, and outdoors in grass, caves, cellars, bridges, and crevices. Female mosquitoes start sucking blood 2-3 days after emergence, while male mosquitoes do not. They feed on plant sap. Mosquitoes not only bite, suck blood, and harass the human body, but also transmit diseases. There are four diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in China, namely dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis, malaria, and filariasis.
