SVD is a semi-automatic designated shooter rifle/sniper rifle. After the Warsaw Pact adopted 7.62 × 39mm medium ammunition cartridges and assault rifles as standard infantry weapon systems, SVD was designed to serve as a squad support role, providing precise long-range combat capabilities for ordinary troops. At that time, NATO used combat rifles equipped with 7.62 × 51mm NATO full power cartridges as standard infantry weapon systems, and had not yet adopted its own intermediate cartridges and assault rifles, making its range beyond its Warsaw Pact counterparts.
