AKMS is equipped with a foldable metal shoulder stock instead of a fixed wooden stock. The metal stock of AKMS is somewhat different from the folding stock of the previous AKS-47 model, as it has an improved locking mechanism that can lock the two support arms of the AKMS stock, instead of just one like the folding model of AKS-47. It is also made of riveted steel stamping parts, rather than most milling versions of AKS-47, and is more like a fixed inventory AKM. Due to the stamping receiver, there is also a reinforcing plate below the pistol grip, which is welded in place.
