It was the first ship of the Japanese Navy's Kaohsiung-class heavy cruiser, one of the largest and most modern cruisers in the Japanese fleet at that time. Construction began on April 28, 1927 at the Yokosuka Naval Shipyard, launched on May 12, 1930, and officially entered service on May 31, 1932. He participated in many important battles in World War II, including the Philippine landings, the Battle of Java, and two-front operations in the Aleutian Islands and Midway.
