It is the first ship of the latest Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy. It is named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford, who served on the USS Monterrey, a light aircraft carrier during World War II. A number of new technologies have been adopted, including electromagnetic aircraft ejection systems, advanced blocking devices, dual-band radars, advanced weapon elevators, etc., which have increased aircraft sorties and reduced personnel requirements.
