Milk thistle is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant of the family Asteraceae in the dicotyledonous plant class. Also known as white thistle, milk thistle, and North American milk thistle, it has antioxidant properties and can protect liver cells from free radical damage. Milk thistle has been used in Europe to treat liver diseases. Annual or biennial herbaceous plant, with a height of 1.2 meters. The stem is upright, branched, with edges, and rarely unbranched. All stem branches have a white powdery compound, covered with sparse spider silk hair or shedding. Lotus shaped basal leaves and lower stem leaves have petioles, completely elliptical or oblanceolate, up to 50 centimeters long and 30 centimeters wide, pinnately lobed to fully lobed.
