The ancient large-scale percussion instrument of the Han ethnic group in China, bianzhong, emerged during the Zhou Dynasty and flourished during the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period until the Qin and Han Dynasties. China is the earliest country to manufacture and use music clocks. It is made of bronze and is arranged by flat round bells of different sizes in order of pitch. It is hung on a huge bell stand and struck with a T-shaped wooden hammer and a long rod, producing different musical notes. Because each bell has a different pitch, striking according to the score can play beautiful music. A set of copper bells with different pitches are hung on a wooden frame, and the maids play music with small wooden hammers.
