The lira (L1) is a coin minted, representing the basic unit of the Italian lira. The 1 lira coin, as well as the 50 cent, 2 lira, and 5 lira coins, began to be minted in 1861 and were initially made of 900 ‰ silver. After World War I, from 1921 to 1938, a 1 lira coin was minted with nickel; Since 1939, it has been cast in Italian coin steel with a diameter of 26.7 millimeters. After the collapse of the monarchy, the one lira coin was minted in Italian aluminum magnesium alloy with a thickness of 17.2 millimeters and 0.625 grams (1951-1959).
