The appearance of the Academy Awards is that of a naked man with his hands crossed on his chest, holding a long sword, standing on a five ring film plate. Each ring represents an important department of the film academy: production, director, screenwriter, actors, and technical personnel. The initial prize box was set aside by Mayer for $500 to be made by George Stanley. The box was thirteen and a half inches tall, weighing six and three-quarters pounds, and was made of alloy inside. The silver surface was covered with a thin layer of gold, which looked shiny, so it was called the Golden Statue Award.
