She is one of the nine muse goddesses inspired by poetry in ancient Greek mythology. She holds a piano and a staff entwined with two snakes. This statue was created from marble by Italian sculptor Antonio Canova in 1816. It is one of the nine muse statues designed by Kanova for Tsar Alexander I of Russia. These statues were originally intended to be placed at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, but due to the sudden death of the Tsar, they were scattered to different places. The Poetic Muse was ultimately acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1968. It is one of the most important collections of the museum.
