It is a famous volcanic crater located on the east side of Hre ð avatn Lake in the Borgafjord region of western Iceland. About 170 meters high, formed about 3400 years ago, it is a popular hiking destination and not far from the campus of the University of Beaufort. It is the largest of the three craters on the same volcanic fissure. In the volcanic eruption 3400 years ago, the magma ejected from these three volcanic vents formed a 7 square kilometer lava field with an average thickness of 20 meters. This eruption also caused a change in the flow direction of the Nor ð ur á River, forming the current Hre ð avatn Lake.
