Houke Gui is a tree in the Lauraceae family, belonging to the Houke Gui genus. It can reach a height of up to 20 meters and has rough bark. The old branches are thick, angular, light brown, and the small branches are cylindrical. The leaves are alternate or opposite, leathery, long elliptical, with a long or short apex gradually pointed. The base is wide and wedge-shaped, with a bright upper part and a pale white lower part. The petiole is concave on the abdomen and convex on the back. Panicles axillary and terminal, covered with yellow small hairs. The flowers are light yellow, with extremely short pedicels. The two sides of the perianth are covered with yellow small hairs. The perianth tube is gyroscopic, and the perianth lobes are nearly obovate. The filaments are fluffy, and the ovary is rod-shaped. The style is linear, and the fruit is spherical or flattened. When ripe, it is purple black. It blooms from April to May and bears fruit from August to December.
