Allium sativum L. is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Allium genus in the lily family, divided into hard leaved garlic and soft leaved garlic. Usually composed of mostly fleshy, petal shaped small bulbs arranged closely together, with several layers of white to purple membranous scales on the outer skin. The leaves are wide and elongated to lanceolate, flat. Scapes solid, cylindrical. The involucre falls early, and the umbel inflorescence is densely bulbous. There are several flowers in between, with slender pedicels and large ovate bracts. The flowers are often light red in color, and the style does not extend beyond the perianth. The flowering period is in July.
