A breed of cattle derived from the southern U.S. state of Texas, hence the name. Known for its prominent long horns and rough appearance, the horns of bulls can often grow to be very long, sometimes reaching or exceeding 7 feet. In the 16th century, when the Spanish conquistadors brought cattle to the New World, these cattle then multiplied freely in the vast grasslands of Texas. Very adaptable to tough grazing conditions, able to tolerate extreme climates and rough grazing environments. It is favored by cattle farmers for its strong disease resistance, heat and cold resistance, high fecundity and low feeding cost. It has also become a symbol of western American culture because of its unique appearance and cultural significance.
