A large, curved shield with a simple and effective design, it was used from the end of the Republic until about 300 AD. Made of three layers of plywood with an outer layer of iron or bronze strips, it is strong and light, weighing about 15 pounds. Capable of covering from the soldier's shoulder to the knee, wide enough to allow the soldier to squat completely hide behind it. Its curved design provides excellent side protection, both in charge and at rest. The design of the shield was inspired by the movie "The Eagle", which is about the LegioIX, the Ninth Legion, which existed in the UK about 100 years later.
