In the mid-1960s, various forms of VTOL were popular. In 1965, Lockheed Corporation responded to the US Army's request for proposals with the CL-945 concept, a design for a retractable rotor helicopter. At low speeds and hovering, it will operate as a helicopter; At higher speeds, the aircraft propulsion system will provide power for it; At speeds much higher than those typically achieved by helicopters, the rotor will stop rotating and fold back and retract to achieve minimum resistance. This is a great idea, but there is a small problem, which is that it is very complex, heavy, and expensive.
