When viewed from the side, the giant shell of the hard shell sea urchin is conical and has a flat base. The petals are short and wide, which are very prominent and are specifically used for breathing. When alive, there are also tubular feet on the petals, and the bone plates in the walking zone are short and wide. The mouth is located in the center of the lower surface and has 5 obvious protrusions, thus forming a star shape. The anus is located in the posterior side of the upper surface, and the original surface has many short, slender shell needles. The conical shape of young specimens is not obvious. It is common on sandy limestone surfaces in the eastern United States.
