It is a lava flow complex associated with the Cerro del Leon volcano in the Andes Mountains of northern Chile. It is the largest known Quaternary siliceous volcanic body in the world and also part of the latest active phase of the Altiplano Puna volcanic complex. The lava flow covers a length of 14.5 kilometers and a height ranging from 350 to 400 meters, making it one of the largest known lava domes in the world. The formation of CerroChao underwent three eruptions, followed by a volcanic debris stage. Three large lava flows erupted at the mountain pass between two volcanoes and advanced for a maximum length of 14 kilometers.
