The painter is the French Romantic painter Theodore Jericho, who painted this painting at the age of 27 and later became a symbol of French Romanticism. The size of this painting is 491 centimeters by 716 centimeters. This painting depicts the survival scenes of survivors after the sinking of the French Navy's patrol ship Medusa. This shipwreck occurred in the waters near Mauritania on July 2, 1816. At least 147 people survived. Initially, they drifted on a homemade raft, but when they were rescued 13 days later, only 15 survived. During this time, they lacked food and water, and some even ate corpses to maintain their lives.
