The Air Jordan 4 was first proposed by designer Tinker Hatfeld as a guard shoe concept, and was designed with the lightweight speed basketball shoe design concept in mind. The upper of the shoe combines leather and nylon mesh to reduce weight while enhancing comfort. The midsole continues the previous design and uses a separate forefoot visualization AirSole air cushion. The lace holes and heel lift are inspired by the basketball net, cleverly incorporating basketball sports into the shoe design. It was after the release of AJ4 that the Air Jordan series was truly included in the modern cultural dictionary and became a cultural phenomenon.
