It is a subspecies of black tailed deer distributed along the west coast of North America. It mainly inhabits the coastal rainforests of Sitka Island in Alaska, British Columbia in Canada, and Washington State in the United States. The body size is usually smaller than that of black tailed deer on the mainland. The fur color is dark brown in winter and turns reddish brown in summer, while the abdomen and buttocks are usually white. Helps with camouflage in forest environments of different seasons. Males have well-developed antlers, while females do not. Mainly feeds on plants, including leaves, tender branches, herbaceous plants, and berries. It is a solitary or small group animal, usually most active in the early morning and dusk.
