It is a genus in the family Elephantidae, order Longnose, named by Baron Georges Cuvier in 1825. African elephants are the largest mammals on land, with males and females exhibiting dimorphism. Adult African male elephants can reach heights of up to 3.5 meters and up to 4.1 meters. Weighing approximately 2.7 to 6 tons, females are smaller than males, with a maximum recorded weight of 13.5 tons. Their maximum recorded weight of long teeth is 102.7 kilograms. Because of ivory, countless African elephants were killed. African elephants are listed in Appendix I of the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Endangered Species (CITES).
