Final Fantasy VIII is primarily set in a fictional world consisting of five major continents. The second largest continent is Galbadia, located in the west of the world, with many must pass places for games. The northernmost continent of Trobia is an ice sheet region. In the roughly central part of the world map is Baram, which is the smallest land, and this big island is where the game begins. There is also a relatively small continent in the middle, which has become desolate, riddled with holes, and covered with rocks due to the impact of the "Tears of the Moon" - the monster falling from the moon to Earth event. The land at the southern end is composed of fragmented and separated islands.
