This statue was created by the ancient Greek sculptor Agassias, who was the son of Doricius. This statue was created around 100 BC and was discovered near Anzio in southern Rome in 1611. Since then, it has been included in the collection of Borghese, hence the name Borghese Gladiator. In 1807, Napoleon Bonaparte purchased this statue and brought it to the Louvre.
