This statue depicts the pharaoh Ramses II of the 19th Dynasty, wearing the Holy Serpent Crown and the Nimes headscarf. When this statue was discovered, it was already damaged, losing its limbs and lower half. It is one of a pair of Ramses statues originally located on the flank of the entrance to the Temple of Latin America, and the head of the other statue is still at the entrance of the Temple of Latin America. This statue was transported from Egypt to England by Italian explorer Giovanni Belzoni in 1816 and was acquired by the British Museum in 1821. It is now one of the representative artifacts of the British Museum, displayed in Hall 4.
