The three-dimensional decorative design widely used in Islamic architecture, in which a hierarchy composed of individual elements, including niches like cells, brackets, and pendants, protrudes from the lower levels. Mukharnas decoration (usually made of mud, brick, wood, and stone) is commonly used in the eaves, corner arches, domes, inner surfaces of arches, and other parts of buildings throughout the Islamic world since the 12th century. From bottom to top, when the light shines on its finely carved and symmetrically designed surface, Mukhanas presents an astonishing visual effect.
