The telegraph machine is a device used to send and receive telegrams. In 1835, after three years of research by American painter Morse, the first telegraph machine was invented. Morse successfully used the "on", "off", and "length" of electric current to replace human text for transmission, which is the famous Morse code. The invention of the telegraph marked the beginning of the telecommunications era and opened the history of human use of electricity to transmit information. In 1871, China secretly opened the telegraph in Shanghai. In 1879, Li Hongzhang built the first military telegraph line on the mainland, followed by the opening of the Tianjin Shanghai telegraph line, and the establishment of the Telegraph Bureau in Tianjin.
