是鹰形目鹰科鹰属的鸟类。喙和爪子都是弯钩形，锋利无比；体格强壮，骨骼结实，双腿肌肉紧实；双翼羽毛粗硬，动作迅猛，飞行速度快。眼睛锐利有神，眼珠的颜色与爪子的形状都和狮子如出一辙；呼吸粗重，叫声嘹亮。雌鸟比雄鸟体型大。用膺部攻击其他鸟类，故名。多栖息于开阔的平原、草地和低山丘陵地带。营巢于高树或悬崖峭壁上。白天常单独在高空飞翔，性情机警，视力敏锐。主食小鸟、鼠类、蛇类和昆虫，也吃家禽和腐尸。
